NEW STUDY: The Effect of CPAP therapy on nocturnal blood pressure fluctuations

NEW STUDY: The Effect of CPAP therapy on nocturnal blood pressure fluctuations, nocturnal blood pressure, and arterial stiffness in patients with coexisting cardiovascular diseases and obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea can induce dramatic nocturnal blood pressure fluctuations and can be associated with nocturnal hypertension and arterial stiffness. This recent study published in Sleep and breathing investigated the effect of short- and long-term continuous positive airway pressure therapy on NBPFs*, nocturnal blood pressure*, and arterial stiffness in patients with coexisting cardiovascular diseases. The results of this study showed that patients with coexisting CVD and OSA have significantly more frequent NBPFs compared with controls and NBPFs are associated with the mean value of nocturnal blood pressure and arterial stiffness. CPAP therapy reduces the frequency of NBPFs, the arterial stiffness, and after 6 months the mean value of nocturnal blood pressure.
